Course Summary

To give the underpinning knowledge on assessment processes and practices with the view of progressing towards qualifying as an assessor.

• Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment.

You will achieve the knowledge unit which will give you the understanding to later progress to the full qualification to become an assessor.

Course Content

The course looks at:

The Principles and Practices of assessment
The role of the assessor.
Planning assessment with a holistic approach.
The principles behind ensuring fair assessment and standardisation.
The legal requirements for assessment for applying health and safety and equality and diversity in assessment.

Course Assessment

The course will run over a two-day period, part of this will include an induction to the unit and the systems used for submitting assignment work. Following the delivery of the course over the two days you will have a further two weeks to complete the knowledge assignment which is made up of eight outcomes. Your work will be marked by your tutor and then sampled by the IQA prior to claiming your award.

Materials

A course reference book will be beneficial for the knowledge unit. Either: ‘Achieving your TAQA Assessor and Internal Quality Assurer Award’ – Anne Gravells. (Approx. £20) OR ‘The Best Assessors Guide’ – Hilary Read. (Approx. £30) A notebook or word processor for classes would be required.

Qualifications

The Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment.

Progression

There is the possibility that you may progress onto the Award in assessing Vocationally Related Achievement or the Certificate in Assessing Vocationally related achievement once you secured a paid or voluntary position where you have access to learners to assess them on a qualification you are occupationally qualified in.

Entry Requirements

You must have a good level of English writing skills with reasonable ICT skills to use the Microsoft Teams platform to view resources and submit assignment work. Some knowledge or experience of assessment would be beneficial but not essential. It is necessary to have some knowledge of the qualification that you will want to assess on in the future (what you are occupationally competent in) so you can relate to this when answering your assignment. This can be discussed prior to enrolment.
