Course Summary

This course is the first step for anyone wanting obtaining a teaching qualification. It is suitable for those who wish to enter the field of teaching in the Lifelong Learning sector (learners who are 16+). If you have considered teaching in Further Education at a college such as Dudley College, but are unsure if it is the right thing for you, this is the course for you/. It will give you a taster of the professional skills you will develop as a teacher and allow you to assess if it is the right career choice for you.

The course consists of a variety of weekly modules which will prepare you for entering the teaching profession. In this 8-week course you will learn how to plan, deliver and evaluate teaching practice.

The sessions are designed for those with little/no previous experience of teaching who are interested in passing on their existing skills and experience, by pursuing a teaching role on a full or part-time basis.

Course Content

This course will provide you with the building blocks of teaching and learning; how to plan and deliver an effective lesson taking into account the needs of learners with regards to resources and activities.

You can progress on to an accredited teaching qualification. Modules included:

• Why get into teaching? (what are the benefits of torching, what personal characteristics do you need)
• An introduction to Pedagogy (planning and delivering lessons)
• Working with learners with special educational needs
• Using technology to support your delivery (Nearpod, Teachermatic, Microsoft)
• Managing the classroom (including stretching and challenging learners, managing disruption)
• Professional conduct and safeguarding.

There will be an opportunity to observe a teaching session and deliver a session of your own.

Course Assessment

Attendance throughout the programme and completion of your own teaching session with reflection of lessons learnt.

Qualifications

There is no formal qualification and a college certificate will be issued to all completing learners.

Progression

This qualification may lead to further study/higher education such as:

Level 4 Certificate in Teaching and Learning (formerly CTLLS). This course is suitable for those already in a teaching/training role. The entry requirements are a minimum of 30 hours teaching over the duration of the course.

Level 5 Certificate in Education / Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (formerly DTLLS).

Entry Requirements

A good standard of English and maths is desirable. A specific skill/ professional expertise that you wish to pass on to learners is essential.
