Course Content

The ESOL for Teaching Assistants course provides comprehensive training for non-native English speakers aiming to support teachers and students in schools. The course begins by exploring the different types of schools, their organisational structures, and the roles of staff and external professionals. Learners will delve into child development, covering stages from birth to 19 years, and understand how to keep children healthy, safe, and well.

Communication skills are a key focus, with practical training on effective techniques for interacting with children, young people, and adults in educational settings. The course also covers supporting learning, including insights into the National Curriculum and the role of extracurricular activities in child development. Additionally, learners will gain an understanding of maintaining a safe learning environment and promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion within schools. Through practical exercises and real-life scenarios, students will apply their knowledge and skills, preparing them to confidently assist in educational settings.

Course Assessment

Students in the ESOL for Teaching Assistants course will be assessed through various methods to ensure comprehensive evaluation of their knowledge and skills. The assessment methods include written assignments, practical tasks, and direct observations. Learners will complete tasks such as designing informational materials, creating charts or diagrams, and setting up displays. These assignments will help assess their understanding of the course content and their ability to apply it in real-world scenarios.

Additionally, learners will maintain a portfolio of evidence that includes reflective diaries and logs of their activities. This portfolio will demonstrate their progress and competence in supporting teaching and learning, communication, and maintaining a safe environment.

Throughout the course, students will also engage in professional discussions and oral questioning to further assess their knowledge and understanding. Expert witness testimonies may be used when direct observation is not practical. These assessments will be conducted in English to ensure learners can effectively communicate and perform their roles in educational settings.

All assessments will be internally marked and quality assured to meet the standards set by the NCFE CACHE Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in School.
