Course Summary
Our Entry Level 1 ESOL Skills for Life course is designed to help learners develop essential English language skills for everyday life, work, and further education. This course focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and listening, providing a comprehensive foundation for those at the beginning of their English language learning journey. Suitable for diverse learners, including refugees, asylum seekers, migrant workers, and settled minority communities, this course encourages integration into the community and supports progression into higher levels of education and employment.
Course Content
The ESOL Entry Level 1 course covers essential skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Reading: Students will engage with simple texts such as public signs, notices, emails, and letters. They will learn to follow short texts on familiar topics, use language features to understand meaning, identify the purpose of texts, and find relevant information.
Writing: Learners will practice constructing simple sentences, using correct punctuation and capitalisation, and spelling common words. Activities include writing notes, messages, emails, and completing simple forms with personal details.
Speaking and Listening: This component focuses on basic conversational skills. Students will practice asking and answering questions, expressing preferences and feelings, giving information, and following simple instructions. Interactive exercises, role-plays, and discussions will help build confidence and fluency.
The course ensures learners develop a solid foundation in English, preparing them for further education, employment, and everyday communication.
Course Assessment
The end of course assessments will be ESB (English Speaking Board) ESOL examinations which are externally set.
Initial assessment is carried out to decide on the most appropriate level for you to study.
Full support is given throughout your studies with regular reviews of your progress. Ongoing assessments, tasks and/or tests will take place throughout the course to allow your tutor to monitor your progress.

Materials
All class-based materials will be provided but you will need to provide a notebook and a pen, and a dictionary is recommended.
Qualifications
Upon successful completion of the ESOL Entry Level 1 course, learners will receive the ESB Entry Level Award in ESOL Skills for Life (Entry 1). This qualification is recognised nationally and demonstrates basic proficiency in English, covering reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. It provides a solid foundation for further education and employment opportunities.
Progression
After completing the ESOL Entry Level 1 course, learners can progress to the ESOL Entry Level 2 course. This next level further develops their English language skills, enhancing their ability to communicate effectively and confidently in more complex situations. Continued progression supports better integration into the community, access to further education, and improved employment prospects.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for the ESOL Entry Level 1 course. However, prospective learners will undergo an initial assessment to determine their current English language skills. This ensures that the course is suitable for their level and that they can benefit fully from the instruction provided. All learners should be committed to improving their English and actively participating in the course activities.
