Course Summary

This course is aimed at students with special educational needs or disabilities to develop their independence and social skills, enabling them to fully participate in their family and community lives.
In order to encourage each individual to reach their full potential, students are given the opportunity to take part in a wide and varied range of experiences and activities which are lead by their own interests and aspirations.

Course Content

Units may cover, but are not limited to, the following:
Personal skills: personal hygiene – looking after yourself, cooking – healthy eating, preparing simple snacks / meals, keeping fit – exercise, completing simple household task
Communication and social skills – The use of a range of alternative / augmentative communication tools will be used to support communication - e.g., Makaton signs and symbols
Creative skills, sensory art, crafts, dance/ drama/music sessions
Community participation – visits out to local places, visiting speakers, fund raising, day-to-day life, preparing for adulthood
Embedded literacy and numeracy

Course Assessment

Students are assessed through witness statements, Q&A, observation and practical application, collated as a portfolio of evidence.

Materials

Overalls and appropriate footwear for use in the garden.
Appropriate clothing and footwear for sports.
Cooking apron, charges for cookery ingredients.
Other clothing and/or equipment may be required depending on activities each group choose to become involved in.

Whilst there are no formal entry requirements, students will be interviewed by the course tutor and support team to ensure their suitability for the course.
