Course Content

Photography includes a strong emphasis in specialist image-making skills and techniques, opportunities for developing a personal style and guidance in producing a unique portfolio of commercial as well as artistic images, based around several units and projects, including areas such as documentary, darkroom, portraiture, fashion, advertising, etc.

Photographic assignments are set designed to reflect workplace situations, activities and demands. Core units are supported by specialist photography units such as location techniques, studio techniques, darkroom practice and image manipulation using computer applications.

On the successful completion of these units, you will have the basic building blocks to further your skills in year 2, where you will have time to explore in more depth specialist specific areas of photography like documentary, advertising, fashion, etc. You will work on more extensive self-directed projects with a view to building a portfolio for university or job interviews whilst preparing for a final year exhibition.

Course Assessment

Continuous assessment of course work in the first and second years across a range of mandatory and professional specialist units. Assessments will be project based, set and marked by course tutors.

Year 2 culminates in a final exhibition, ArtsFest, which is open to the public.

Materials

An equipment list will be issued to learners upon acceptance on to the course. A starter pack is available to purchase from the college.

Progression

The course will give you the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills you require to progress as a professional photographer within the photographic industry or direct entry onto a high-level HNC, HND or BA (Hons) degree course in Photography.

Career options: Portrait/wedding photographer, photojournalist/sports photographer, freelance photographer, art photographer/gallery curator, etc.

Entry Requirements

You should have 4 GCSEs at grade C or above (including English language) or a BTEC First Diploma in Art & Design or Creative Digital Media Level 2. You will be invited to attend an interview, ideally with a portfolio of images. You will also need to demonstrate your interest and commitment to the subject. If you do not meet the entry requirements but have considerable talent and enthusiasm you may be considered.



You should have 3 GCSEs at grade C, one must be in a creative field and a grade 4 in English OR a BTEC First Diploma in Art & Design / BTEC First Diploma in Creative Digital Media or equivalent. You will be invited to attend an interview, ideally with a portfolio of images. You will also need to demonstrate your interest and commitment to the subject.  If you do not meet the entry requirements but have considerable talent and enthusiasm you may be considered.
