Course Summary
This Level 2 Technical Certificate in Painting and Decorating is aimed at you if you are looking to work in the construction industry specifically as a craftsperson in painting and decorating. A painter and decorator has the skills and knowledge to use a range of coverings such as paint and wallpaper to enhance and protect surfaces such as plaster, metal and wood, and plays an important part of any construction team. You will gain an understanding of the skills and knowledge that are important when you are working as a painter and decorator or progressing to further learning and training in this area. This qualification is suitable if you are16 years old, or over. You don’t need any previous experience to start this qualification. This qualification is designed to help you enter into employment in the construction industry as a painter and decorator.
Course Content
This qualification covers all the main skills and knowledge you will need to progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work as a painter and decorator. You will study the following mandatory content:
- Principles of construction
- Access equipment
- Preparation of surfaces for decoration
- Application of surface coatings
- Application of papers to walls and ceilings
- Producing decorative colour effects
Course Assessment
To gain this qualification, candidates must successfully achieve the following assessments:
One externally set, externally moderated assignment
One externally set, externally marked exam, sat under examination conditions

This qualification is supported by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) The FMB is the UK’s largest trade
association in the building industry and was established to protect the interests of small and medium-sized
building firms. The FMB supports the above qualification as being important for employment within the industry.
Materials
Protective footwear, clothing including white bib and brace overalls and writing materials are required.
Progression
This qualification will allow you to progress into employment or onto the Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Painting and Decorating.This will allow you to enhance the skills and knowledge that you have gained at level two, to progress into higher job roles such as an advanced craft painter and decorator. This qualification could also lead you to an apprenticeship in construction. There are a number of new and exciting apprenticeships currently being developed in construction, including painting and decorating, so you could progress to be an apprentice working as a painter and decorator.
Entry Requirements
Maths and English grade must be a Minimum of GCSE 4/C or Functional skills at L2 in both subjects and a Level 1 in Painting and Decorating.
