Course Summary

Aspire's Gateway course is designed for young people with a special educational need or disability with a particularly acute social, emotional or mental health difficulty, detailed as their primary need in their EHCP or formal diagnosis. Gateway offers a supportive environment in which students can share experiences, learn to feel safe at college and develop the skills required to succeed in education and at home. The course offers ample opportunity to explore the local community and overcome anxieties associated with day-to-day life, includes communication and study skill development as well as literacy and numeracy, physical activity and community engagement.

It aims to develop strategies to support integration into college, including mindfulness and self-reflection, as a transition into the chosen pathway of study.

Course Assessment

Portfolio based assessment.
Assessment of M&E as a GCSE or Functional Skills, if suitable for the students level of ability.

Materials

Small contribution to educational visits (less than £5.00 per visit)

Qualifications

OCR Life & Living Skills Entry Level 3

Progression

Any area of study of interest to the student, appropriate to level of ability, offered subject to successful taster and transition activity.

Completion of a needs assessment and successful taster session.
