Course Summary

The ESOL for Volunteering course is designed to help non-native English speakers develop the language skills and knowledge required to volunteer effectively in various organisations. This course combines English language learning with essential volunteering skills, including understanding the role and responsibilities of a volunteer, the benefits of volunteering, and the standards required in a volunteering role. By the end of the course, students will be equipped to contribute meaningfully to their communities and gain valuable experience that enhances their employability and personal development.

Course Content

The ESOL for Volunteering course introduces learners to the world of volunteering, focusing on both language skills and practical knowledge. Students will learn what volunteering involves, the commitment required, and its benefits. They will explore different voluntary organisations and the roles volunteers play. The course emphasises developing essential skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, along with understanding personal standards like following rules, dress codes, and customer care. It also covers equal opportunities, health and safety in volunteering, and provides guidance on finding and applying for volunteer roles. By the end, learners will be well-prepared to volunteer effectively in various settings.

Course Assessment

Students in the ESOL for Volunteering course will be assessed through a combination of practical tasks, written assignments, and the creation of a portfolio of evidence. This portfolio will demonstrate the learner’s achievement of all learning outcomes and assessment criteria for each unit. Assessments include creating presentations, designing information leaflets, completing worksheets, and performing tasks in real or simulated volunteering roles. Learners will also engage in self-reflection, review their performance, and receive feedback from assessors. This comprehensive assessment approach ensures learners are well-prepared and confident in their volunteering skills.

Employer Benefits

The ESOL for Volunteering course equips individuals with essential English language skills and practical volunteering experience, making them valuable assets to any organisation. Employers benefit from volunteers who can communicate effectively, understand and follow organisational standards, and contribute to a positive and inclusive environment. These well-prepared volunteers help improve service delivery, support staff, and enhance the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the organisation.

Materials

All class-based materials will be provided but you will need to provide a notebook and a pen, and a dictionary is recommended.

Qualifications

Upon successful completion of the ESOL for Volunteering course, students will be awarded the NCFE Level 1 Award in Volunteering. This nationally recognised qualification demonstrates the learner's ability to effectively support voluntary organisations, showcasing their skills in communication, teamwork, and adherence to professional standards. This award enhances employability and provides a strong foundation for further study or volunteer work.

Progression

After completing the ESOL for Volunteering course, learners can progress to the Level 2 Award in Volunteering or the Level 2 Award/Certificate in Employability Skills. This qualification also opens up opportunities for volunteer work in various sectors, providing a solid foundation for those looking to gain further experience or pursue additional studies in related fields.

Entry Requirements

To enrol in the ESOL for Volunteering course, learners must undergo an initial assessment to ensure their English language competency is at Entry 3 ESOL level or above. Additionally, learners must demonstrate a commitment to actively participating in a voluntary role with one of our partner charities. This ensures that all participants are adequately prepared and motivated to succeed in the course and their volunteering roles.
