Pillar 2: Learning, Teaching and Research

Our Progress To-date

Our biggest resource is our learners as we teach thousands of students across the college, so it follows that our number one priority is to promote Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and map our curriculum to the UN 17 Sustainable goals (SDG’s). Embedding sustainability into the curriculum will equip our students with knowledge and understanding, skills and attributes needed to work and live in a way that safeguards the environmental, social, and economic well-being in the present and for future generations. This will have an impact on their industries as they enter the world of work.

Some curriculum areas naturally lend themselves more to developing an understanding of the issues i.e., environmental science, or construction but our intent, is to ensure all learners understand more about this issue and explore ways that they can contribute to the net zero goal, through changing their own behaviours.

Most awarding bodies have embedded sustainability into learning outcomes for their qualifications. We are delivering these in line with Qualification Curriculum Reform and we have embedded climate responsibility into staff development and induction.

Our future actions

We will:

  • Deliver climate literacy training to all staff
  • Align curriculum against Sustainability Development Goals using the Responsible Futures Framework
  • Participate in SDG Teach Ins
  • Train teaching staff to incorporate sustainability into all courses.
