Course Summary
This course is designed for students with special educational needs or disabilities with an interest in animal welfare, conservation and the outdoors.
Students will attend a placement at Brockswood Animal Sanctuary in Sedgley feeding, cleaning, and caring for sick, injured, mistreated, abandoned and unwanted animals.
Animals include: goats, sheep, poultry, pigs, ponies, ferrets, foxes, Guinea pigs, emus, owls, birds of prey, raccoons and many more.
Students will also maintain an allotment at Hawbush Community Gardens where they learn about the land, growing fresh produce and conservation.
There are opportunities for Forest School activities including natural fence building, caring for wildlife and outdoor cookery.
Students also develop skills to support their preparation for adulthood, including employability, looking after themselves in the home, travel and community cohesion.
All students will take part in real-life work experience in our Aspire Shop, learning how to run a business, work with the public and back-of-house preparation.
Course Content
Areas covered can include (but aren't limited to) the following:
Workplace safety.
Making a familiar journey.
Behaviour at work.
Bed down farm animals.
Clean poultry accommodation.
Recognise trees and plants.
Recognise and care for tools in conservation.
Maintain a footpath.
Feed farm animals.
Move a farm animal.
Recognise types of animal housing and bedding for small animals.
Course Assessment
Assessment is completed through a portfolio of evidence and through observation of practical tasks.

Entry Requirements
Students will be individually assessed at interview by both Support & Curriculum Teams to ensure academic and support needs can be met by the college.
