The Healthcare Science Assistant - Level 2 Apprenticeship (Clinical Engineering Pathway) provides a unique opportunity for employers to recruit and develop technical staff who support the maintenance, management and safe use of medical equipment within healthcare settings.
Delivered in partnership with Avensys Training, this apprenticeship equips learners with the foundational knowledge, skills and behaviours required to work safely and effectively within Clinical Engineering and Medical Engineering departments. Apprentices contribute to patient care by supporting the maintenance, preparation and management of essential medical equipment used across healthcare services.

Healthcare Science Assistants work as part of wider healthcare science teams, supporting routine technical and scientific procedures while ensuring equipment, environments and processes meet required safety and quality standards. This apprenticeship is delivered in collaboration with Avensys Training, a specialist provider with extensive expertise in medical engineering, clinical engineering and healthcare technology training.
The partnership combines Dudley College's apprenticeship expertise with Avensys Training's specialist technical knowledge, ensuring apprentices receive industry-relevant training aligned to current healthcare engineering practices.
What will Apprentices Learn?
Apprentices develop the practical skills and technical knowledge needed to support healthcare science activities within clinical engineering environments.
Training is delivered through a blend of workplace learning, technical instruction and specialist support provided through the partnership between Dudley College and Avensys Training.
The programme is delivered remotely.
Programme content includes:

A key benefit of this apprenticeship is the achievement of a recognised technical qualification.
Apprentices will achieve:
- Level 2 Diploma in Healthcare Science
- English and Maths qualifications where required
Achievement of the Level 2 Diploma in Healthcare Science is a mandatory gateway requirement before progressing to End-Point Assessment.
Entry Requirements
Apprentices should be employed in a suitable role that allows them to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the occupational standard.
Apprentices should also hold a grade 3 or equivalent in both GCSE English and maths.
Apprentices may be required to work towards English and maths qualifications as part of their apprenticeship where appropriate. We will provide advice on the requirements that apply to your apprentice and support them throughout their learning journey.
How is the Apprentice Assessed?
Apprentices are assessed throughout the programme through workplace observations, discussions, written work and portfolio development.
End-Point Assessment includes:
• Vocational Competence Observation
• Professional Practice Test
• Professional Discussion informed by portfolio evidence
Before undertaking the End-Point Assessment, apprentices must demonstrate achievement of the required knowledge, skills and behaviours and complete the mandatory qualification requirements.
