Course Summary

This course combines two units from the Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Mechanical Engineering: Unit 4008 Mechanical Principles (15 credits) and Unit 4011 Fluid Mechanics (15 credits). It is designed to develop the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for employment within the mechanical engineering sector or progression to higher-level study. The units provide a strong foundation in the principles that underpin the design, analysis and operation of mechanical systems and engineering processes.

How will my course be funded

From January 2027, the way Higher Education (HE) courses are funded is changing.

If you start an eligible HE course from January 2027, you may be able to apply for a Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) student loan to help pay your tuition fees.

The LLE is a new student finance system that gives you more flexibility. You can use your LLE funding to study individual modules over time, or build modules together towards a full qualification.

How do I repay the loan

Repaying an LLE student loan works in a similar way to other student loans.

You only start making repayments when you earn more than £25,000 a year. You then repay 9% of the amount you earn above £25,000.

For example:

  • £25,000 salary - £0 repayment
  • £26,000 salary - £90 a year (£7.50 a month)
  • £27,000 salary - £180 a year (£15 a month)
  • £28,000 salary - £270 a year (£22.50 a month)
  • £30,000 salary - £450 a year (£37.50 a month)
  • £35,000 salary - £900 a year (£75 a month)

You do not pay 9% of your whole salary. You only repay 9% of the amount you earn above £25,000.

How much are the tuition fees

For courses staring in January 2027 funded through the LLE, the tuition fees are:

  • Full-time qualification: £6,000
  • Part-time qualification: £3,000
  • Individual module: £1,500

Your LLE student loan can be used to cover eligible tuition fees, subject to the relevant funding rules and your available LLE entitlement.

Course Content

Unit 4008: Mechanical Principles (15 credits) introduces the fundamental concepts that underpin mechanical engineering. Learners study the effects of forces on static and dynamic systems, including equilibrium, motion, energy, power, stress, strain and mechanical power transmission. The unit develops the ability to apply engineering mathematics and scientific principles to analyse mechanical components, predict system behaviour and support engineering design decisions.
Unit 4011: Fluid Mechanics (15 credits) focuses on the behaviour of liquids and gases in engineering applications. Students explore fluid properties, pressure, hydrostatics, fluid flow, energy relationships and losses within pipe systems. The unit also examines the operation and performance of pumps, hydraulic equipment and pneumatic systems, enabling learners to evaluate fluid-based systems and solve engineering problems encountered in industrial environments.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold one of the following:

• BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering (MMM or above)
• BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering (MM or above)
• A Levels including Mathematics and Physics at Grade C/4 or above
• Relevant Level 3 City & Guilds qualification
• Access to HE Diploma in Engineering

Relevant industry experience will also be considered.

Course Assessment

Assessment is through Pearson-approved assignments and practical assessments.

Employer Benefits

Successful learners will develop the technical knowledge and problem-solving skills required to support production, product development and maintenance activities. They will be able to provide technical guidance to junior engineering staff, support quality improvement activities and contribute effectively to resolving technical issues with suppliers, subcontractors and customers.

Qualifications

These units contribute towards the Pearson BTEC Level 4 HNC in Mechanical Engineering.

Progression

Successful completion of both units provides 30 credits towards the full HNC in Mechanical Engineering and supports progression to higher-level engineering studies.

Funding may be available to support your learning as an adult (aged 19+) studying at Dudley College in the following circumstances:

  • If the course is funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and they have given us permission to offer it at no cost to you and live in the WMCA area.
  • If the course is part of the ‘Free Courses for Jobs’ government scheme and you are unemployed or working for a low wage.
  • If the course is funded by the Department for Education (DfE) / WMCA and you meet certain criteria (such as this being the first qualification of this type and level you are studying, or unemployed, or working for a low wage).

Your personal circumstances and the funding available to you will be discussed at enrolment, if would useful if you bring evidence including proof of income / benefits; proof of age (i.e. driving licence); prior qualifications.

English & Maths: If you have not previously achieved GCSE grade C or above in English and/or maths, you can study these for free.
