Adult Carpentry Level 1

This course provides learners with the essential skills and knowledge needed to carry out basic carpentry tasks in the construction industry. It focuses on developing practical abilities.

Learners will also gain an understanding of health and safety, construction methods, materials, and how to interpret basic drawings. The course prepares learners for progression to higher-level training, apprenticeships, or entry-level roles in carpentry and construction.

The aim of this course is to provide learners with the essential knowledge, practical skills, and understanding required to work within the carpentry and construction industry. It develops competence in core carpentry techniques. Carpentry encompasses a core set of fundamental techniques used to shape, connect, and finish wood. Whether you are framing a house or building fine furniture, mastering the layout, cutting, joinery, and finishing processes is the foundation of the craft. While promoting safe and effective working practices in accordance with industry standards.

This course develops the knowledge and practical skills required to carry out carpentry tasks safely and to industry standards within construction environments.

Assessment for this qualification is designed to ensure learners demonstrate both practical competence and underpinning knowledge required for the carpentry trade. Learners are assessed through a series of practical tasks carried out in a workshop environment. Learners will also complete internally assessed tests to measure their understanding of knowledge specifically for Health & Safety and Introduction to the construction Industry.

Employers benefit from learners who have completed the City & Guilds 6219-08 Carpentry course as they bring basic practical skills, a strong understanding of health and safety, and knowledge of industry standards. These learners can carry out essential carpentry tasks, use tools correctly, and work safely, meaning they require less initial training and supervision. They also demonstrate positive work behaviours such as teamwork and time management, making them well-prepared to contribute on site and develop further within the construction industry.

You will achieve the City & Guilds Level 1 6219-08 in Carpentry.

This course could provide a stepping stone into an Apprenticeship with a suitable employer sponsor.

Unemployed or a low wage earner

Funding may be available to support your learning as an adult (aged 19+) studying at Dudley College in the following circumstances:

• If the course is funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and they have given us permission to offer it at no cost to you and live in the WMCA area.
• If the course is part of the ‘Free Courses for Jobs’ government scheme and you are unemployed or working for a low wage.
• If the course is funded by the Department for Education (DfE) / WMCA and you meet certain criteria (such as this being the first qualification of this type and level you are studying, or unemployed, or working for a low wage).

Your personal circumstances and the funding available to you will be discussed at enrolment, if would useful if you bring evidence including proof of income / benefits; proof of age (i.e. driving licence); prior qualifications.

English & Maths: If you have not previously achieved GCSE grade C or above in English and/or maths, you can study these for free.
