Course Summary

This course provides learners with the essential skills and knowledge needed to carry out basic bricklaying tasks in the construction industry. It focuses on developing practical abilities such as laying bricks and blocks, building solid and cavity walls, and working accurately to line and level.

Learners will also gain an understanding of health and safety, construction methods, materials, and how to interpret basic drawings. The course prepares learners for progression to higher-level training, apprenticeships, or entry-level roles in bricklaying and construction.

The aim of this course is to provide learners with the essential knowledge, practical skills, and understanding required to work within the bricklaying and construction industry. It develops competence in core bricklaying techniques, including setting out, laying bricks and blocks, constructing walling, and interpreting construction drawings, while promoting safe and effective working practices in accordance with industry standards.

Course Content

This course develops the knowledge and practical skills required to carry out bricklaying tasks safely and to industry standards within construction environments.

Course Assessment

Assessment for this qualification is designed to ensure learners demonstrate both practical competence and underpinning knowledge required for the bricklaying trade. Learners are assessed through a series of practical tasks carried out in a workshop environment. Learners will also complete internally assessed tests to measure their understanding of knowledge specifically for Health & Safety and Introduction to the construction Industry.

Funding may be available to support your learning as an adult (aged 19+) studying at Dudley College in the following circumstances:

  • If the course is funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and they have given us permission to offer it at no cost to you and live in the WMCA area.
  • If the course is part of the ‘Free Courses for Jobs’ government scheme and you are unemployed or working for a low wage.
  • If the course is funded by the Department for Education (DfE) / WMCA and you meet certain criteria (such as this being the first qualification of this type and level you are studying, or unemployed, or working for a low wage).

Your personal circumstances and the funding available to you will be discussed at enrolment, if would useful if you bring evidence including proof of income / benefits; proof of age (i.e. driving licence); prior qualifications.

English & Maths: If you have not previously achieved GCSE grade C or above in English and/or maths, you can study these for free.
