The Level 2 Technical Occupational Entry in Automotive Care (Diploma) is designed for learners who are looking to begin a career in the automotive industry. This programme provides the essential knowledge and practical skills required to work safely and effectively within a motor vehicle workshop environment.

Throughout the course, students will gain hands-on experience carrying out routine vehicle servicing, inspections, and basic maintenance tasks. Learners will develop an understanding of key vehicle systems, workshop procedures, and industry expectations, helping them build confidence and prepare for further study or entry-level employment.

The course combines practical workshop training with classroom-based learning to provide a foundation in automotive maintenance and repair.

The course typically covers:

• Health and safety practices in the automotive workplace
• Introduction to vehicle systems and components
• Routine light vehicle servicing and inspections
• Wheels, tyres, steering and suspension systems
• Braking systems
• Basic engine systems
• Use of tools and workshop equipment
• Customer service and workplace communication
• Air Conditioning systems
• Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS)

Assessment is carried out through a combination of:

• Practical workshop tasks
• Written assignments and knowledge-based assessments
• Online or paper-based tests (where required)
• Portfolio evidence of completed work

Learners are assessed throughout the course to ensure they meet the required standards and develop both technical knowledge and practical skills.

Students will be required to have:

• Safety boots (steel or composite toe cap)
• Suitable workshop clothing/overalls
• Basic stationery for classroom sessions

The college will provide access to workshop tools, equipment, and learning resources required for the qualification.

Funding may be available to support your learning as an adult (aged 19+) studying at Dudley College in the following circumstances:

• If the course is funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and they have given us permission to offer it at no cost to you and live in the WMCA area.
• If the course is part of the ‘Free Courses for Jobs’ government scheme and you are unemployed or working for a low wage.
• If the course is funded by the Department for Education (DfE) / WMCA and you meet certain criteria (such as this being the first qualification of this type and level you are studying, or unemployed, or working for a low wage).

Your personal circumstances and the funding available to you will be discussed at enrolment, if would useful if you bring evidence including proof of income / benefits; proof of age (i.e. driving licence); prior qualifications.

English & Maths: If you have not previously achieved GCSE grade C or above in English and/or maths, you can study these for free.
