Course Summary
The course will cover all aspects of electrical installation. Candidates will develop the skills and knowledge install, maintain and repair electrical systems in industrial, commercial and domestic environments. The course covers all aspects of work a qualified electrician may come across including working in both indoor and outdoor settings. They will be able to work on their own proficiently and work without immediate supervision in the most efficient and economical manner.
The course will enable candidates to contribute to the design of electrical systems. They are able to set out jobs from drawings and specifications and requisition the necessary installation materials
The course delivers all the main skills and technical knowledge required with the candidate choosing the installation or maintenance section of the qualification which is best suited to their daily job role so evidence can easily be obtained for the NVQ aspect of the course. The delivery is completely the same for all with the only difference being one exam a different NVQ unit.
The aim of this course is to provide the knowledge and develop the skills required for an electrician to be able to install all aspects of electrical components to a high standard and be able to plan jobs of all sizes from small to large installations in a safe and productive manner.
Course Content
The course is split into three distinct areas – knowledge and skills and behaviours –
Knowledge and skills -
• Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for the termination and connection of conductors, cables and cords in electrical systems
• Understand and apply the practices and procedures for the preparation and installation of wiring systems and electro technical equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
• Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for the inspection, testing, commissioning and certification of electro technical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
• Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for diagnosing and correcting electrical faults in electro technical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
• Understand and apply the electrical principles associated with the design, building, installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems
• Oversee and organise the work environment.
In addition,
Installation Electricians must:
• Understand and apply the principles of planning and selection for the installation of electro technical equipment and systems in buildings, structures and the environment.
Maintenance Electricians must:
• Understand and apply the practices and procedures for planning and preparing to maintain electro technical systems and equipment.
In all of these activities candidates must understand and apply health and safety and environmental regulations, guidance notes and relevant codes of practice; and the requirements of the current edition of the Wiring Regulations.

Course Assessment
Candidates will work towards the end point assessment known as the AM2S
Achievement of the AM2S (Electro technical Assessment of Occupational Competence) demonstrates
apprentices have the level of competence expected by the Electro technical industry in the following
key occupational areas:
The interpretation of specifications, drawings and diagrams.
Risk assessments and health and safety.
Safe isolation
Planning and preparing to install, terminate and connect wiring systems.
Installing, terminating and connecting wiring systems.
Inspection, testing and certification.
Fault diagnosis and correction of electrical faults.
The understanding and application of industry recognised procedures, working practices and
the requirements of statutory and non-statutory regulations.
In accordance with an installation specification and the relevant statutory and non-statutory
regulations candidates will be expected to install, terminate, connect, inspect, test and commission:
Lighting and power circuits
A three-phase distribution board and sub-circuit
A central heating/sustainable energy system
A safety services circuit and device
A data-cabling system.
The assessment is in four sections:
Section A – Composite Installation
Section B – Inspection and Testing of the completed composite installation
Section C – Fault Diagnosis and Correction
Section D – Assessment of Applied Knowledge

Qualifications
Upon completion of this course candidates will achieve a level 3 qualification.
Progression
Upon successful completion candidates can progress to the full 18th edition qualification, inspection and testing, design & verification qualification, electric vehicle charging and the level 4 qualifications of the HNC/HND depending on the pathway they hope to take within the industry.
