The Healthcare Science Associate - Level 4 Apprenticeship (Clinical Engineering Pathway) is designed for employers seeking to develop highly skilled technical professionals who can support the maintenance, management, testing and performance of medical equipment across healthcare environments.

Apprentices gain the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to work confidently with complex healthcare technologies while supporting patient safety, regulatory compliance and service delivery.

Healthcare Science Associates support Healthcare Science Practitioners and Clinical Scientists by carrying out technical, scientific and engineering activities with increasing autonomy. Within the Clinical Engineering pathway, apprentices learn how to maintain, calibrate, fault find and manage medical equipment used across healthcare services.

This apprenticeship is delivered in collaboration with Avensys Training, a nationally recognised specialist provider in Clinical Engineering and Medical Engineering workforce development.
Avensys was one of the first providers approved to deliver the Clinical Engineering pathway and brings extensive technical expertise, specialist equipment knowledge and industry experience to the programme.

What will Apprentices Learn?
Apprentices develop advanced technical knowledge and workplace competence through a combination of practical engineering experience, structured training and specialist technical delivery.
Training is delivered through workplace learning, specialist training sessions, Dudley College learning activities and technical input from Avensys Training, providing learners with extensive exposure to real-world healthcare engineering environments.
The programme is delivered remotely.

- Clinical engineering workshop skills

- Medical equipment maintenance and calibration

Apprentices learn how to safely manage healthcare technologies while supporting patient safety, service reliability and organisational compliance.
Qualifications included:

Apprentices will achieve:
- Pearson BTEC Level 4 Diploma in Healthcare Science (Clinical Engineering Pathway)
- English and Maths qualifications where required
Successful completion of the programme and End-Point Assessment enables apprentices to achieve the Healthcare Science Associate occupational standard.
Entry Requirements
Apprentices should be employed in a suitable role that allows them to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the occupational standard.
Apprentices should also hold a grade 4 or equivalent in both GCSE English and maths.
Apprentices may be required to work towards English and maths qualifications as part of their apprenticeship where appropriate. We will provide advice on the requirements that apply to your apprentice and support them throughout their learning journey.
How is the Apprentice Assessed?
Apprentices are assessed throughout the programme through workplace activities, technical assignments, portfolio development and regular progress reviews.

The End-Point Assessment confirms that apprentices have achieved the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to operate as competent Healthcare Science Associates.
