Course Summary

This apprenticeship has been designed to be taken by anyone wanting to work as a Healthcare Science Assistant within a clinical environment. Apprentices working in either a clinical engineering or decontamination science departments will learn foundation techniques to carry out low-risk, routine, technical and scientific procedures, including decontamination processes. The Level 2 Healthcare Science Apprenticeship will last a minimum of 12 months and will provide an excellent insight into aspects of healthcare science.

The Apprenticeship provides opportunities for those already working within the Clinical Engineering (or Medical Engineering) or Decontamination sectors to gain formal qualifications for roles they currently hold, enhancing existing skills and knowledge in Healthcare Science and developing new technical and professional skills. The Level 2 Healthcare Science Apprenticeship is the perfect start to a career in Clinical Engineering.

Course Assessment

Regular, on-programme assessment in the workplace of the apprentice’s development performance and competency which will include direct observation of practice, discussions and written work to ensure full and sufficient evidence towards apprentice readiness to undertake the End Point Assessment.

Assessment Gateway

Achievement of Level 1 English and Level 1 Mathematics qualifications and test taken for Level 2 English and Mathematics prior to taking the end point assessment (not required to pass at Level 2);
Achievement of the Level 2 Diploma in Healthcare Science;
Satisfactory evidence, usually recorded in a portfolio, demonstrating that the apprentice has achieved the skills, knowledge and behaviours set out in the Standard;
Some evidence that the apprentice has developed an insight into their personal and professional development

End Point Assessment

Element 1 - Vocational Competence Observation
Element 2 - Professional Practice Test
Element 3 - Professional discussion informed by the evidence presented

Progression

On sucessful completion of the Level 2 Healthcare Science Assistant Apprenticeship Standard you will be able to progress onto the Level 4 Healthcare Science Associate Apprenticeship Standard.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this Apprenticeship.
You will need to be employed in an appropriate setting and be DBS checked.

You will be expected to have a sound understanding of Maths and a good level of written English to complete this qualification.
