Delivered in partnership with Avensys Training, this apprenticeship develops the technical expertise required to support healthcare technology and clinical engineering services, helping to ensure medical devices and equipment remain safe, reliable and fit for purpose. The programme supports workforce development within Clinical Engineering, Medical Engineering and Healthcare Technology Management environments.

This apprenticeship is delivered in collaboration with Avensys Training, a specialist provider with significant expertise in clinical engineering, medical engineering and healthcare technology training.

The partnership combines Dudley College's apprenticeship delivery expertise with Avensys Training's industry knowledge, ensuring apprentices receive relevant, employer-focused technical training that reflects current industry practice.

What will Apprentices Learn?

Apprentices develop advanced technical knowledge and practical skills to operate confidently within healthcare engineering environments.

Training combines workplace learning, technical instruction, practical projects and specialist support through the partnership between Dudley College and Avensys Training.

The programme is delivered remotely.

Programme content includes:

  • Healthcare engineering principles
  • Medical device technologies
  • Inspection, testing and maintenance of medical equipment
  • Fault diagnosis and repair techniques
  • Electrical safety testing
  • Risk management and patient safety
  • Quality assurance and compliance
  • Calibration and performance verification
  • Healthcare regulations and governance
  • Engineering documentation and record keeping
  • Decontamination and infection prevention
  • Health, safety and environmental procedures

Apprentices learn how to maintain and support a wide range of healthcare technologies while ensuring equipment remains safe, compliant and operational.

Qualifications included:

A key benefit of this programme is the opportunity to achieve a recognised technical qualification alongside the apprenticeship standard.
Apprentices may work towards:

  • A relevant Level 3 healthcare engineering or engineering qualification aligned to the apprenticeship
  • English and Maths qualifications where required

Specific qualification requirements should be confirmed against the current delivery model agreed between Dudley College and Avensys Training.

Entry Requirements

Apprentices should be employed in a suitable role that allows them to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the occupational standard.

Apprentices should also hold a grade 4 or equivalent in both GCSE English and maths (or Functional Skills in English and maths).

Apprentices may be required to work towards English and maths qualifications as part of their apprenticeship where appropriate. We will provide advice on the requirements that apply to your apprentice and support them throughout their learning journey.

How is the Apprentice Assessed?

Apprentices are assessed throughout the programme through:

• Workplace observations

• Practical competency assessments

The End-Point Assessment (EPA) confirms that apprentices have achieved the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for occupational competence.
