Apprenticeship Summary

Develop the surveying specialists who shape the world around us

The Geospatial Survey Technician - Level 3 Apprenticeship is designed for employers looking to develop highly skilled technicians capable of collecting, analysing and managing geospatial data to support construction, infrastructure and environmental projects.

Geospatial Survey Technicians play a critical role in modern development by capturing precise data that enables organisations to design, build and manage projects safely and efficiently. Using advanced surveying equipment and digital technology, they create accurate maps, models and datasets that support decision-making across a wide range of sectors.

Is this apprenticeship right for your business?

If your organisation works within construction, engineering, infrastructure, utilities or environmental services, this apprenticeship offers an excellent way to build specialist surveying capability.

Geospatial Survey Technicians use advanced digital surveying technologies to measure and map land, buildings and infrastructure. Their work supports project planning, risk reduction, asset management and construction delivery by providing accurate geospatial information.

What will Apprentices Learn?

Apprentices develop the technical knowledge, digital skills and practical competence required to undertake geospatial surveys and produce accurate spatial information.

Training combines workplace experience, surveying activities, specialist equipment use and structured off-the-job learning, ensuring apprentices can apply their learning directly within real projects.

The programme is delivered on a block release basis.

Programme content includes:

  • Geospatial data collection and management
  • Survey planning and site reconnaissance
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Mapping and cartography principles
  • Topographical and measured building surveys
  • Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS)
  • Laser scanning technologies
  • Survey calculations and data processing
  • Coordinate systems and geodesy
  • Building Information Modelling (BIM)
  • Utilities and infrastructure surveys
  • Health, safety and environmental responsibilities
  • Digital surveying software and technologies

Apprentices learn how to capture, process and present geospatial information that supports construction, engineering and environmental projects.

Professional Skills Development

The apprenticeship develops occupational competence through hands-on surveying experience and advanced technical training.

Apprentices gain practical experience using industry-standard technologies including:

  • GIS software
  • GNSS equipment
  • Total stations
  • Laser scanners
  • Building Information Modelling tools
  • Data capture and processing systems

These skills are increasingly important as the construction and infrastructure sectors continue to embrace digital transformation.

Entry Requirements

Apprentices should be employed in a suitable role that allows them to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the occupational standard.

Apprentices should also hold a grade 4 or equivalent in both GCSE English and maths.

Apprentices may be required to work towards English and maths qualifications as part of their apprenticeship where appropriate. We will provide advice on the requirements that apply to your apprentice and support them throughout their learning journey.

How is the Apprentice Assessed?

Apprentices are assessed throughout the programme through workplace activities, project work, portfolio development and competency reviews.

The End-Point Assessment (EPA) typically includes:

• Multiple-choice Knowledge Test
• Project with Questions
• Structured Interview supported by a Portfolio of Evidence

These assessments ensure apprentices can demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to operate as competent Geospatial Survey Technicians.
