Apprenticeship Summary

Build the skilled fabrication and welding workforce your business needs

The Engineering Operative (Fabrication & Welding Pathway) - Level 2 Apprenticeship is an effective way to recruit new talent or develop existing employees with the practical skills required to support fabrication, welding and manufacturing operations.

Apprentices develop the core knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to work safely and efficiently within engineering environments, while contributing directly to production activities from day one. The programme provides a strong foundation for careers in fabrication, welding and wider engineering disciplines.

Is this apprenticeship right for your business?

If your organisation is looking to address skills shortages, strengthen succession planning or develop a pipeline of future fabrication and welding specialists, this apprenticeship offers an excellent solution.

Engineering Operatives support the manufacture, assembly and production of engineering products and components. They work under supervision while developing the practical skills required to become competent engineering professionals.

What will Apprentices Learn?

Apprentices develop essential engineering knowledge alongside practical fabrication and welding skills that can be applied immediately in the workplace.

Training combines workplace learning, technical instruction, practical projects and structured off-the-job training, ensuring apprentices gain valuable hands-on experience while supporting business operations.

The programme is delivered on a day release basis.

Programme content includes:

  • Engineering health, safety and environmental practices
  • Engineering drawings and technical information
  • Fabrication processes and techniques
  • Welding principles and practical applications
  • Materials preparation and handling
  • Measuring, marking out and assembly techniques
  • Quality standards and inspection processes
  • Engineering tools, equipment and machinery
  • Safe use of fabrication and welding equipment
  • Team working and communication
  • Continuous improvement and workplace efficiency
  • Engineering behaviours and professional responsibilities

Learning combines expert teaching with practical application, enabling apprentices to develop skills that contribute directly to productivity, quality and operational performance.

We'll work closely with you to ensure the training programme supports both the apprentice's development and the needs of your business.

Professional Skills Development

The Engineering Operative Apprenticeship focuses on developing occupational competence through a combination of workplace training, technical learning and practical experience.

Apprentices gain exposure to industry-standard fabrication and welding techniques while developing the technical understanding required to operate safely and effectively within engineering environments.

This approach allows employers to develop skills aligned directly to their equipment, products and operational requirements.

Entry Requirements

Apprentices should be employed in a suitable role that allows them to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the occupational standard.

Apprentices should also hold a grade 3 or equivalent in both GCSE English and maths.

Apprentices may be required to work towards English and maths qualifications as part of their apprenticeship where appropriate. We will provide advice on the requirements that apply to your apprentice and support them throughout their learning journey.

How is the Apprentice Assessed?

Apprentices are assessed throughout the programme through workplace activities, practical tasks, progress reviews and evidence of skills development.

At the end of the apprenticeship, apprentices complete an End-Point Assessment (EPA) that confirms they have achieved the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the occupational standard.

Assessment methods are designed to reflect real workplace activities and demonstrate occupational competence.
