The Level 2 Dog Grooming Assistant (7863-02) – Will provide learners with the practical skills and knowledge that is important for working as a dog grooming assistant. Learners will work for a business which could be based in a salon or a mobile unit.

The Level 2 Dog Grooming Assistant (7863-02) qualification covers the skills the learner will need to progress to work as a Dog Grooming Assistant. Mandatory content covers:

• Preparing and grooming dogs prior to bathing
• Bathing of dogs
• Drying dogs and preparing a dog for styling
• Carrying out trimming of a dog’s coat to prepare for styling
• Moving and lifting dogs
• Maintaining the cleanliness and biosecurity of the dog grooming environment
• Professional conduct
• An introduction to anatomical features, breed characteristics and behaviour of dogs

The assessment for this qualification will require you to achieve:

A theory exam which will cover the knowledge and understanding within the qualification and a synoptic assignment which requires the learners to identify and use effectively in an integrated way an appropriate selection of skills, techniques, concepts, theories, and knowledge from across the content area.

Learners will need to purchase their own dog grooming uniform and professional scissor set. More details will be provided at the start of course.

Upon successful completion you will achieve a Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Certificates enabling you to work in a grooming salon.

This qualification is the pre-requisite for progression onto the Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming (7863-03) and so on successful completion of the Level 2 Dog Grooming Assistant (7863-02) qualification learners can progress their knowledge and skills further in this area to become a professional dog groomer and enrol onto the Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming (7863-03).

Ideally learners will have grade 3 or above in four GCSEs or equivalent. including English and maths.

Funding may be available to support your learning as an adult (aged 19+) studying at Dudley College in the following circumstances:

• If the course is funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and they have given us permission to offer it at no cost to you and live in the WMCA area.
• If the course is part of the ‘Free Courses for Jobs’ government scheme and you are unemployed or working for a low wage.
• If the course is funded by the Department for Education (DfE) / WMCA and you meet certain criteria (such as this being the first qualification of this type and level you are studying, or unemployed, or working for a low wage).

Your personal circumstances and the funding available to you will be discussed at enrolment, if would useful if you bring evidence including proof of income / benefits; proof of age (i.e. driving licence); prior qualifications.

English & Maths: If you have not previously achieved GCSE grade C or above in English and/or maths, you can study these for free.
