Apprenticeship Summary

Develop the design and construction professionals who deliver successful projects

The Construction Design and Build Technician - Level 4 Apprenticeship is designed for employers seeking to develop highly skilled technicians who can support the planning, design, coordination and delivery of construction projects.

Construction Design and Build Technicians play a vital role in bringing together architects, engineers, contractors and clients to ensure projects are designed efficiently and delivered safely, sustainably and to specification. They coordinate technical information, manage design processes and support project teams throughout the construction lifecycle.

Is this apprenticeship right for your business?

If your organisation works within construction, engineering, development or the built environment, this apprenticeship provides an excellent route to developing future design and project delivery professionals.

Construction Design and Build Technicians support multidisciplinary teams by coordinating design information, managing technical data and helping ensure projects meet client, regulatory and operational requirements. They work across a wide variety of sectors, including residential, commercial, infrastructure and sustainability-focused developments.

What will Apprentices Learn?

Apprentices develop the technical, commercial and management knowledge required to support the design and delivery of construction projects.

Training combines workplace experience, project-based learning and higher-level technical study, enabling apprentices to apply learning directly within live construction environments.

The programme is delivered on a day release basis.

Programme content includes:

  • Client requirements and project briefing
  • Design coordination and management
  • Construction technology and materials
  • Building regulations and compliance
  • Risk assessment and health and safety
  • Sustainability and environmental performance
  • Building Information Modelling (BIM)
  • Digital construction processes
  • Technical design documentation
  • Cost control and project delivery
  • Quality assurance and compliance monitoring
  • Contractual and commercial awareness
  • Project communication and stakeholder management

Apprentices learn how to coordinate design information effectively, support project teams and contribute to the successful delivery of construction projects from concept through to completion.

Qualifications included

A key feature of this apprenticeship is the achievement of a recognised higher-level technical qualification.

Apprentices will complete:

  • A Level 4 qualification in Construction and the Built Environment, approved by relevant professional bodies and aligned to the apprenticeship standard
  • English and Maths qualifications where required

This qualification supports progression towards technician-level professional recognition within the construction industry.

Entry Requirements

Apprentices should be employed in a suitable role that allows them to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the occupational standard.

Apprentices should also hold a grade 4 or equivalent in both GCSE English and maths.

Apprentices may be required to work towards English and maths qualifications as part of their apprenticeship where appropriate. We will provide advice on the requirements that apply to your apprentice and support them throughout their learning journey.

How is the Apprentice Assessed?

Throughout the programme, apprentices complete workplace-based learning, project activities and portfolio development.

The End-Point Assessment (EPA) consists of:

• Online Knowledge Test
• Project
• Professional Discussion

The project is based on a real workplace application and demonstrates the apprentice's ability to apply their knowledge, skills and behaviours within a construction environment.
