Apprenticeship Summary
The Building Services Engineering Installer - Level 2 Apprenticeship is designed for employers looking to recruit and develop skilled installation engineers who support the heating, cooling and environmental systems that keep modern buildings operating safely and efficiently.
Building Services Engineering Installers work within the construction and engineering sectors, installing and testing large-scale systems such as heating, chilled water, hot water and cold-water services used in commercial and industrial buildings. These systems are critical to the operation of offices, schools, hospitals, factories and other public and private facilities
Is this apprenticeship right for your business?
If your organisation works within building services, construction, mechanical engineering or facilities infrastructure, this apprenticeship offers an effective way to develop technical installation skills and future engineering talent.
Building Services Engineering Installers help ensure that heating and cooling systems are installed correctly, operate efficiently and meet safety, environmental and quality standards. They work closely with installation teams, site managers and other construction professionals to deliver essential building services infrastructure.
What will Apprentices Learn?
Apprentices develop the knowledge, technical skills and professional behaviours required to install and test building services systems safely and effectively.
Training combines workplace learning, practical installation experience and structured off-the-job training, enabling apprentices to develop competence while contributing to live projects.
The programme is delivered on a day release basis.
Programme content includes:
- Health, safety and environmental requirements
- Planning and preparation of installation activities
- Building services engineering principles
- Pipework installation techniques
- Heating and cooling systems
- Hot and cold-water systems
- Bracketry and component installation
- Testing and inspection procedures
- Pre-commissioning activities
- Decommissioning and dismantling systems
- Sustainable working practices
- Quality assurance and communication
Apprentices learn how to install, test and support the operation of systems that circulate temperature-controlled water through commercial and industrial buildings to provide heating and cooling.
Professional Skills Development
The apprenticeship develops occupational competence through real-world installation experience and technical learning.
Apprentices gain experience in:
- Mechanical installation techniques
- System testing and inspection
- Working from technical specifications
- Safe use of tools and equipment
- Teamworking and communication
- Quality control and problem solving
The programme develops both practical engineering ability and the professional behaviours required to work effectively on construction sites and within operational buildings.
Entry Requirements
Apprentices should be employed in a suitable role that allows them to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the occupational standard.
Apprentices should also hold a grade 3 or equivalent in both GCSE English and maths.
Apprentices may be required to work towards English and maths qualifications as part of their apprenticeship where appropriate. We will provide advice on the requirements that apply to your apprentice and support them throughout their learning journey.
How is the Apprentice Assessed?
Apprentices are assessed throughout the programme through workplace activities, reviews, practical assessment and evidence of competence.
The End-Point Assessment (EPA) consists of:
• Knowledge Test
• Practical Skills Test
These assessments confirm that apprentices can successfully apply the knowledge, skills and behaviours required of a Building Services Engineering Installer.
