They work across a range of vehicle systems and are an integral part of the day-to-day success of automotive service and fast-fit operations.

Is this apprenticeship right for your business?

If your organisation is looking to address skills shortages, develop future technicians or strengthen customer service and workshop performance, this apprenticeship provides a practical and cost-effective solution.

Autocare Technicians undertake routine servicing, inspections and repairs on cars, light commercial vehicles and emerging vehicle technologies, including electric vehicles. They contribute directly to customer satisfaction, operational efficiency and business growth.

What will Apprentices Learn?

Apprentices develop the practical knowledge, technical skills and professional behaviours required to carry out servicing, maintenance and repair activities safely and efficiently.

Training combines workplace experience, technical development, practical learning and structured off-the-job training, allowing apprentices to apply their learning directly within the workplace.

The programme is delivered on a day release basis.

Programme content includes:

  • Vehicle inspection and maintenance procedures
  • Vehicle servicing and repair techniques
  • Steering, suspension and braking systems
  • Battery, charging and electrical systems
  • Tyre fitting, balancing and wheel alignment
  • Air-conditioning systems
  • Vehicle diagnostics and fault finding
  • Use of specialist tools and equipment

  • Customer service and communication
  • Parts identification and stock management

Apprentices learn how to identify faults, carry out repairs, advise customers appropriately and maintain the high standards expected within the automotive industry.

Learning combines expert guidance with hands-on experience, helping apprentices become productive and confident technicians.

We'll work closely with you to ensure the apprentice's development aligns with the needs of your business.

Professional Skills Development

The Autocare Technician Apprenticeship focuses on developing occupational competence through workplace experience and technical training.

Apprentices gain experience working with a range of vehicle systems, diagnostic tools, customer interactions and workshop processes, ensuring they are equipped to operate effectively in a modern automotive environment.

Unlike some apprenticeship standards, there is no mandatory stand-alone qualification requirement within the apprenticeship. The focus is on achieving occupational competence and successfully completing the End-Point Assessment.

Entry Requirements

Apprentices should be employed in a suitable role that allows them to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the occupational standard.

Apprentices should also hold a grade 3 or equivalent in both GCSE English and maths.

Apprentices may be required to work towards English and maths qualifications as part of their apprenticeship where appropriate. We will provide advice on the requirements that apply to your apprentice and support them throughout their learning journey.

How is the Apprentice Assessed?

Apprentices are assessed throughout the programme through practical workplace activities, reviews and ongoing development.

At the end of the apprenticeship, learners complete an End-Point Assessment (EPA) which includes:

• Knowledge Tests
• Practical Observation
• Professional Review

These assessments confirm the apprentice has achieved the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the Autocare Technician occupational standard.
