Course Summary

The qualification is aimed at those who are already working in the lifelong learning sector in a teaching role.

The course covers planning, pedagogical issues, subject specialism and practitioner research. At its core it is a holistic model of critical reflective practice. The programme will develop you as a reflective practitioner to enable you to develop learning opportunities for your students. You will develop your knowledge and skills in areas such as planning, delivering and assessing, inclusive practice, curriculum policy and practice and e-learning.

Study Mode: Part Time – 2-year programme

The Level 5 course will run as follows:
Year 1 - Tuesday am 8.45 - 12.00 am
Year 2 (continuing students) - Tuesday pm 13.00 – 16.00pm

The qualification prepares learners for joining a community of practice underpinned by a strong culture of teaching and learning and critical enquiry. The course is designed to meet the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) professional standards and has at its heart a model of critical reflective practice that facilitates an ongoing professional dialogue between student, mentor and tutor.

Course Content

This qualification includes the following: classroom-based learning, 1:1 tutorial & mentor support, observations of your teaching practice and self-directed study.

You will have the opportunity to explore key educational theories and link these to your own practice.

Your tutor will give you individual support with your assignments and feedback on your observed teaching.

Course Assessment

The assessments for this qualification include assignments, teaching evidence, presentations, a research assignment, and observations of teaching performance carried out by your course tutor.

Level 5 Certificate in Education Post Compulsory Education (Cert Ed) & Post Graduate Certificate in Education Post Compulsory Education (PGCE (PCE))

This qualification is a pre-requisite for achieving QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills). QTLS is the nationally recognised status for post-16 education and training and further details can be found on their website.

You will also gain HE credits that may enable you to progress onto the BA (Hons) Post Compulsory Education course.

Entry Requirements

For entry onto this qualification learners must have: a minimum of 150 hours teaching practice over the duration of the course in order to enable you to complete the qualification, this may be part time, full time, paid or voluntary.

Applicants should hold:

• An appropriate qualification of at least National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 3 in the subject area in which you are teaching or have the required industry experience.
• Level 2 English qualification (FS, GCSE or equivalent)
• Level 2 maths qualification (or to be working towards achievement of this by the end of the course)
• Applicants must have access to a minimum of 75 hours of teaching/training practice per year.

You will be required to take an initial assessment in maths and English prior to enrolling on the course. Dependent on the result you may be required to develop your level of maths and/or English.

RPL: Applicants who hold a Level Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTTLS/CET) may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) subject to university procedures.
