Course Summary

The Pneumatics (Automation) modular course is designed to support learners who have an interest in pneumatics and/or are employed in the engineering and manufacturing sector, specifically aligned to automation. Learners may have completed a previous engineering qualification and wish to progress to higher level qualifications, or to develop knowledge and skills required to work in industries where there are requirements to adopt automation.

Course Content

Learners will gain a greater depth of understanding of the principles and practical methods used in Pneumatic circuits, automation, and control. The course is based around Festo pneumatics Rigs allowing fault finding and the building/testing of practical circuits. The main areas covered are:

A. The examination of the technology and characteristics of Pneumatic circuits and control applications used in industry.
B. The investigation of components used as well as the design considerations and simulation of pneumatic systems.
C. The development and testing of circuit designs and the identification of pneumatic components used in industrial systems.

The course content includes the following topics:

• Safe working practices for Pneumatic systems
• The technology and characteristics of Pneumatic components
• The design of pneumatic circuits.
• Fault finding on pneumatic systems
• Setups and functions of: single/double - acting cylinders, valves, magnetic proximity sensors, pressure sequence valves, pressure regulators and pneumatic timers.

Course Assessment

The assessments for this qualification are coursework/homework (between 30 and 60mins per week).

Employer Benefits

• Flexibility in the delivery of the 10-week course modules will allow learners to progress to other modules or higher-level courses / Higher Education.

• There is a shortage of engineering learners progressing to Level 4 study these short courses can help provide the necessary bridge to Higher Education if the learner has been out of education for an extended period.

• Delivery will take place at the Black Country & Marches Institute of Technology offering learners access to modern facilities with industry standard equipment and the latest technologies.

Materials

All class-based materials will be provided.

Qualifications

You will receive a competency certificate on completion of your course.

Progression

The progression routes from this course are:
• Entering employment
• Continuing existing employment (improving understanding and upskilling)
• Opportunity to progress to other units within this group of offerings such as Robotics or PLC courses.
• Progression to higher apprenticeships
• Higher Education

Entry Requirements

For entry onto this qualification learners must have a keen interest in Pneumatics (Automation). It would be beneficial to have an understanding of Industrial Robotics/Electrical engineering, but not essential.
